How a hotel gets into Pharos
We are a journal with a point of view, not a search engine with a booking button. Below is what we look for, what the numbers on each entry mean, where our facts come from and what happens when we get something wrong.
What we look for
A bed is not enough. A hotel earns its place when the stay itself is part of the reason to go, and we weigh five things:
- A sense of place. Somewhere that could only be where it is: inside the walls of the Alhambra, on a crater rim, among vineyards or within earshot of a great waterfall.
- The building. Architecture with something to say, whether a centuries-old palace brought back to life or a new structure shaped by the land around it.
- The way people are looked after. A style of hospitality you would recognize with your eyes closed, from white-glove ceremony to shoes-off ease.
- The table. Cooking rooted in its region, good enough that locals book a table too.
- Its footprint. Hotels that hire from the community, care for the landscape and give something back.
We keep the list deliberately short and spread it across regions, travel styles and the range of prices within the top end. Nobody can pay to be included, and no hotel reads its entry before it goes live.
What the scores mean
Every hotel has eight scores, each from 1 to 5: city, nature, culture, adventure, rest, romance, family and food. They describe the shape of a stay rather than its quality. A desert camp with a 1 for city life isn't being marked down; it just isn't a city hotel. The scores feed the hotel finder, the quiz and the comparison tools, so you can line up hotels against the trip you actually want.
The best and good months take in weather, seasonal events such as wildlife migrations and ski seasons, and how busy a place gets. Temperatures are rough averages of the daytime high.
Where the facts come from
- What each hotel publishes about itself: rooms, restaurants, facilities and the months it is open.
- Official sources for the practical details, including tourism boards, government travel and entry pages, school calendars and emergency numbers.
- Timetables published by airlines and rail operators, which we round and present as a guide rather than a promise.
- Our own reading, research and judgment for itineraries, tips and the feel of each place.
An entry only describes a personal stay when it says so plainly. We never make up reviews, ratings, quotes from guests or prices.
About the pictures
Every image here is an original illustration made for Pharos. They are meant to suggest the setting, not to show the hotel as it is; for photographs, go to the hotel's own website.
Keeping entries current
We revisit entries on a regular cycle and date each update. Room numbers, travel times, seasons and entry rules all shift, so confirm the details with the hotel and official sources before you set off. If something here looks out of date, let us know. We follow up every message and fix the page when we find an error.
Who pays for this
No bookings, no payments, no commissions, and no business ties to any hotel we feature. The site may carry advertising, always clearly labeled, and it has no say in which hotels appear or how we write about them. Our editorial policy sets this out in full.
